About Bravo

Old-school warmth. New-school skills.

Bravo opened on 3 September 2001 and has been at home on Cheap Street since 2005. It's my salon: I'm Scott, and on some days Barney the dog keeps me company. I also rent chairs to independent stylists who run their own businesses here. Here's what I believe in, and what you can expect when you walk through the door.

Mission statement

To make each guest feel

Heard.Inspired.Accepted.Fantastic.

What that means

Four promises

Heard

Every appointment starts with a proper conversation. You tell me what you want, what you don't, and how your hair behaves day to day. We decide together.

Inspired

I train every year with the likes of Sassoon and Not Another Salon, so I can bring you fresh ideas and the latest cut and colour techniques. Sometimes that's the look you came in for. Sometimes it's one you hadn't thought of.

Accepted

Everyone is welcome at Bravo, whatever your sexuality, gender identity, age, background or ability. Come as you are.

Fantastic

The whole point. I want you to walk out looking better and feeling better than when you walked in. After 38 years, that's still my favourite part of the job.

An inclusive salon

Everyone. Always.

I want Bravo to be somewhere everyone feels safe, relaxed and respected. That means LGBTQ+ guests, trans and non-binary guests, disabled guests, and anyone who has ever felt uneasy walking into a salon. Here's how I make that real.

Gender-neutral pricing

My prices are set by the service, the time and the skill involved. A short cut costs the same whoever is in the chair.

Names and pronouns

Let me know your name and pronouns when you book or when you arrive. I'll use them, and you won't have to explain yourself.

No assumptions

I won't guess what style you "should" have. We talk about what you want and how you want to feel, and go from there.

Step-free entrance, ramps inside

You can get in the front door without any steps. Inside, there are steps from reception into the main salon and to the loo, and I have ramps for these. If you use a wheelchair or have other access needs, get in touch before your visit so I can have everything ready.

Your kind of appointment

Prefer a quieter time, less chat, extra time or a carer with you? Just tell me. As it's my own salon, I can usually work around what you need.

Barney, optional

If dogs make you uncomfortable, or you have an allergy, Barney will happily stay in his bed in the back.

Any questions about access or anything else? Email [email protected] and I'll get back to you.

Salon culture

What it's like at Bravo

The same stylist, start to finish

Book with me and you won't be passed around. I'll be the one who listens, cuts, colours and finishes, every single visit. I get to know you and your hair.

A room full of memories

The salon is filled with the retro furniture and colours I love. Guests walk in and say "we had that picture when I was a kid", while younger guests ask how the old tech actually worked. It gets everyone talking.

A bit of theatre

Bravo was meant to open in Basingstoke, next to the Haymarket Theatre, which is where the name comes from. Fate brought us to Newbury instead, and we kept the name. Now a new theatre venue has opened right next door, so we got our theatre in the end. A good haircut deserves a round of applause.

Never standing still

The look is 1975. The skills are right up to date. Courses online and in person, plus a training week every year, keep my cutting and colour current.

A four-legged welcome

Some days Barney, my rescue springer spaniel, is on meet-and-greet duty. If you'd rather he wasn't around, just say and he'll happily nap in his bed in the back.

"I've loved this job since I was 15. I wanted to be creative, meet people and make them feel good about themselves. Bravo is where I get to do all three."
